Tunisian Mosaics: Treasures from Roman Africa (Conservation & Cultural Heritage)

As the Roman Empire expanded its African settlements in the early centuries of the common era, thousands of mosaic floor pavements were fashioned to adorn the townhouses and rural estates of the African upper classes. Between the second and sixth centuries, mosaic art blossomed, particularly in Africa Proconsularis, the region comprising modern Tunisia. In contrast to the official art of imperial Rome, mosaics generally expressed the worldviews of private citizens. These artworks are remarkable for the intricate beauty of their polychromatic geometric and floral designs, as well as for figural scenes depicting the interests and activities of the patrons who commissioned them--scenes of daily life, athletic contests, gladiator spectacles, and classical literature and mythology.
Abundantly illustrated throughout, Tunisian Mosaics: Treasures from Roman Africa offers the general reader a lively introduction to this extraordinary ancient art. Initial chapters survey the historical background of Roman Africa and discuss the development of mosaic art in the Mediterranean. Subsequent chapters profile Tunisia's major mosaic sites and tour the collections of important museums. A final chapter surveys current initiatives to preserve this heritage for future generations.

Plot Synopsis
Driven by her conservative, uneducated parents to succeed where they had not, a Turkish immigrant living in Copenhagen does her best to meet mom and dad's high expectations while simultaneously staying true to her passion for kung-fu in this action film featuring choreography by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's Xian Gao. Aicha (Semra Turan) is a high school student who finds her time constantly split between her studies and her devotion to the martial arts. Though Aicha's father has forbidden her from joining the elite kung fu club presided over by a stern sifu, the young girl secretly attends meeting and begins refining her fighting skills. At first questioning of the sifu's practice of having males and females fight one another, Aicha grows more comfortable with the idea after she begins training with advanced student Emil (Cyron Melville) and a relationship starts to develop between the sparring partners. Back on the family front, Aicha's older brother Ali (Nima Nabipour) and his fiancée Jasmin (Ozlem Saglanmak) begin to worry that Aicha's immodest behavior may somehow jeopardize their upcoming wedding, just as family friend Omar (Behruz Banissi) joins up with the kung fu club. At first it seems that Omar's presence may prove a disaster for all involved, but if Aicha can learn to take responsibility for her own actions perhaps her parents will finally come to respect her for who she is, rather than what they want her to be.

Aicha es una estudiante de preparatoria apasionada del Kung-fu; sus padres, por el contrario, sólo esperan que ella haga sus máximos esfuerzos para que logre ingresar a la mejor escuela de medicina, tal y como su hermano Ali. The film features Godard's most extended use of color to that point, as the shots are filled with blocks of bright primary colors. Pierrot le fou is a catalogue of cinematic inventions and of gestures made by couples in love.
